BACKGROUND
Clive Langer has revealed that with every album, Madness was asked by Dave Robinson to record an instrumental. Following the success of their hit song ‘One Step Beyond‘, he encouraged the band to create more instrumentals. ‘Night Boat To Cairo‘ was another track with very few lyrics. For Return of the Los Palmas 7, Mike had a book of 60s hits, and, as far as Clive remembers, he reversed a Cathy Kirby melody. Mike basically took the chords and played them backwards. He had a special connection with the Tin Pan Alley songwriting traditions.
