There was a stall in Berwick St. market, in London’s Soho, that sold 45s and had a great selection of Blue Beat records – I would buy as many as I could afford and rush home to play them. The ten second crackle of static anticipation as the needle hit the vinyl is still a thrill the CD will never match, and then wham in came the music and if it was Prince Buster you were never let down.. Small pieces of magical musical theatre; Al Capone, Dance Cleopatra, Texas Hold up, Madness, One Step Beyond and many, many, others.

Each one majestically energetic and packed with humour and imagination. Unfortunately many moons later half of my collection was stolen from a friend’s studio, but one of the survivors was a little known track called ‘Girl’.

Straight down the line party music, up beat, up tempo and right up my street. Mr. Buster at his tongue-in-cheek best.
